I’ve dedicated the last 20 years of my career to instructional design and educational research. I have three degrees, including a doctorate focused on online learning. But before I get into that, allow me to back up a bit.
Believe it or not, school was not always easy for me. Despite my natural curiosity, the traditional lecture-style methods of grade school were so out-of-sync with my personal learning style that my grades were not up to snuff. How bad were they? Let’s just say that my mother cried over my report cards.
But that all changed with the variety and independence of high-school curriculum. I drove myself to excel and fell in love with learning; this love turned into a devoted career of instructional design and teaching. Through many years of research, writing and training, I’ve been a part of the movement that has transformed the very systems and learning designs I struggled with as a child.
I believe that the combined power of excellent instructional design and increased access to online learning has led to a revolution in higher-quality education. From the mom-preneur living in the countryside, to the busy metropolitan business owner, to the students in developing countries blazing new, exciting career paths—the online world of education is ever-evolving and transforming people’s lives. My life’s work has been to contribute to this growth and improve upon the methodologies and science behind it.
In my career, I’ve helped thousands of people learn better by teaching and designing curriculum for academia, small businesses, government organizations and the corporate world.
I’m deeply inspired by the impact that effective instructional design can have on individuals and institutions. Whether I’m helping to support corporations provide top-notch training to employees or providing “aha” moments for my clients' learners, my aim is to further students’ knowledge and help them feel supported as they embark on new educational territory.
I’m married to my awesome husband and have 3 step-children, 2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. I live in the West Coast Gulf Islands of Canada on a beautiful remote island, and enjoy winters at our home in Turks & Caicos Islands.
I’m big into yoga, old cars, kayaking and dinner parties—natural beauty, impeccable design and connection with others is my daily inspiration.
The same focus, precision and spirit of enjoyment that I gain from crafting courses also applies to my favorite muse: Making fused glass art.
I volunteer to bring e-learning to a high school in Turks & Caicos Islands, and mentor budding entrepreneurs in running successful businesses. I’m a passionate supporter of these great causes: Canadian Wildlife Federation, Calgary Humane Society and World Vision.
