mobility + learning
Mobile learning can manage learning differently than with traditional modes. Kinkshuk (2003) recounts these as:
- urgency and immediacy of learning needs
- initiating knowledge inquiries
- mobile in terms of space and time
- interaction and integration of content
He also thinks mobile learning can be designed to contextualize learning, throughout life. Whereas, research studies have been examining the cognitive profiles of learners. That is, “smart media-based cognitive trait models are being developed that preserve the state of learner’s cognitive attributes (such as working capacity, inductive reasoning ability, information processing speed and so on) to receive instant adaption” (p.3).
Kinshuk considers using mobile learning environments can adapt the learner’s cognitive traits by providing customized system behaviours to suit the learner. Therefore, more focus can be on learning versus navigating and using an existing system. Yet, this will require mediation between institutional and personal learning requirements. What is more, such profiles needs to work on other platforms integrating systems as learners continual learn in different environments.
